Your Subsequent Apple Watch May Be In a position To Inform If You’re Indoors Or Outdoor

If you are trying to track a workout with your Apple Watch, you have to manually select the activity from the list. However, it seems that you may not have to in the future. This comes from a recently discovered patent, which suggests that future Apple Watches may be able to tell whether you're inside or outside.

This is helpful if you are trying to log and track your training closely. For example, when you start running, the watch may not be able to tell whether you are running on the treadmill or doing laps in the park. This can also contribute to energy savings. If you are running indoors, the GNSS receiver may not need to be activated.

Some criticisms relate to fitness trackers and smartwatches that track user activity. On a stationary device, such as a bike in the gym or on the treadmill, accuracy is compared to outdoor activity not that high. It will be interesting to see if Apple actually has plans to implement such a system for the Apple Watch. However, since this is a patent, it is difficult to say whether it will ever see the light of day.
