The premiere date for Leslie Jones’ first Netflix comedy special has been revealed, as the new trailer promises the hour-long special will begin streaming next month. Called Leslie Jones: Time Machine, the special is co-directed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and Jones has since thanked the duo on social media for their work on the show. As seen in the trailer, the series will officially debut on the streaming service on Jan. 14.
Also in the trailer, various clips of the show can be heard, giving viewers an idea of the jokes Leslie Jones will be delivering to Netflix subscribers. Playing on the involvement of Benioff and Weiss, the trailer also begins by teasing “The Mother of Dragons,” but rather than introducing Daenerys Targaryen, we’re shown Jones quoting the character and pretending to breathe fire. You can watch the official trailer for Time Machine below.
According to the official logline for the Netflix comedy special, Time Machine will show how Leslie Jones “is all about having fun. Through the years that fun has encompassed wild times, crazy experiences, celebrity encounters and a few awkward mishaps. Now older, and enlightened, the comedian imparts her hilarious wisdom on all ages. Strap in, because you’re headed on a wild, side-splitting ride from young adulthood to the present with Leslie Jones.”
It’s worth noting that Time Machine is not a part of the massive overall deal Benioff and Weiss had signed for Netflix, as the pair had already committed to the comedy special prior to that deal getting finalized. For those unaware, the Game of Thrones creators were set to develop a new trilogy of Star Wars movies before signing a multi-year deal with Netflix to the tune of $200 million. This will see them produce plenty of upcoming original movies and television shows for Netflix, but at this time, the details on the projects they have in store for the streaming service have yet to be revealed.
This is also the first Netflix comedy special for Jones, though she had previously released a one-hour special called Problem Child for Showtime. The actress and comedian is perhaps best known for her tenure as a performer on Saturday Night Live. For her work on the sketch comedy show, Jones was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Her many film credits also include a starring role in Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. Additionally, Jones also worked as a commentator for the 2016 olympic games, hosted the BET Awards in 2017, and will host an upcoming reboot of the competitive shopping show Supermarket Sweep.
In light of getting an official release date for Time Machine, Jones has taken to Twitter to thank Benioff and Weiss for their work on the project. “Pure joy! We did it!” Jones writes in the tweet. She adds, “Thanks to D.B. Weiss, David Benioff, Jesse Collins, & their staffs for a great production!” The tweet also includes a brief video of Jones posing with Benioff and Weiss, and you can take a look at it below, courtesy of Leslie Jones.
